World Book and Copyright Day


World Book Day or World Book and Copyright Day is a yearly event on 23 April, organized by UNESCO to promote reading, publishing and copyright. It is also known as International Day of the Book or World Book Days.  In the United Kingdom, the day is instead recognized on the first Thursday in March. World Book Day was celebrated for the first time on 23 April 1995.

Steve Fossett

James Stephen "Steve" Fossett was an American businessman, and a record-setting aviator, sailor, and adventurer. He was Born on April 22, 1944 and he was the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in a balloon and first to cross Pacific in a balloon. He died on September 3, 2007.

The first human eye transplant

On April 22, 1969, doctors at Methodist Hospital in Houston performed what was billed as the first human eye transplant on John Madden, 54, owner of a photography studio. The donor eye was taken from a man who had died of a brain tumor and the donor cornea,lens and iris were given to Madden. Although the transplant failed to restore Madden's sight--it has been reported that the donor eye was not preserved enough to keep it viable--the historic procedure was considered a medical miracle.

Thrissur Pooram  is one of the most popular temple festivals of the South Indian state Kerala. It is held at Vadakkunnathan every year on 'Pooram'  day of the Malayalam Calender month of 'Medam'. 'Pooram' day is the day when the moon rises with the Pooram star. In 2013 its Pooram is on April 21.

India's first satellite launched

Aryabhata was India's first satellite, named after the great Indian astronomer of the same name. It was launched by the Soviet Union on 19 April 1975 from Kapustin Yar using a Cosmos-3M launch vehicle.launch vehicle. It was built by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to gain experience in building and operating a satellite in space.

World Hemophilia Day

World Hemophilia Day is an international observance  held annually on April 17 by the World Federation of Hemophilia  (WFH). It is awareness day awareness day for hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, which also serves to raise funds  and attract volunteers for the WFH. It was started in 1989; April 17 was chosen in honor of Frank Schnabel's birthday.

Johannes Stark - Stark effect

Johannes Stark was born on April 15, 1874, he was a German physicist, and Physics Nobel Prize laureate who was closely involved with the Deutsche Physik movement under the Nazi regime. He died on 21 June 1957. He discovered the Stark effect. It is the shifting and splitting of spectral lines of atoms and molecules due to presence of an external static electric field.
