Auguste Antoine Piccard

Auguste Antoine Piccard was born on 28 January 1884. He was a Swiss physicist, inventor and explorer. He was the inspiration for Professor Cuthbert Calculus in The Adventures of Tintin by Belgian cartoonist Herge. He died on 24 March 1962.

Andre-Marie Ampere was born on January 20, 1775. He  was a French physicist and mathematician who is generally regarded as one of the main founders of the science of classical electromagnetism, which he referred to as "electrodynamics". He died on June 10, 1836.

Sydney Brenner

Sydney Brenner was born on13 January 1927, he is a South African biologist and a 2002 Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine laureate, shared with H. Robert Horvitz and John Sulston.  Brenner made significant contributions to work on the genetic code, and other areas of molecular biology while working in the Medical Research Council Unit in Cambridge, England.

National Youth Day is celebrated in India on 12 January on the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. In 1984 the Government of India declared the day as the National Youth Day and since 1985 the event is celebrated in India every year.

Norman George Heatley

Norman George Heatley was born on 10 January 1911, he was a member of the team of Oxford University scientists who developed penicillin. Norman Heatley developed the back extraction technique for efficiently purifying penicillin in bulk. He died on 5 January 2004.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on 25 December 1924, he is an Indian statesman who served as the 10th Prime Minister of India, in three non-consecutive terms, first for 13 days in 1996, then for 13 months from 1998 to 1999 and then from 1999 to 2004 for a full five year term. He is the only parliamentarian to have been elected from four different states at different times namely UP, MP, Gujarat and Delhi.

Srinivasa Ramanujan

Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on 22 December 1887. He was an Indian mathematician and autodidact who, with almost no formal training in pure mathematics, made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. He died on  26 April 1920.

Russell Alan Hulse

Russell Alan Hulse was born November 28, 1950 and he is an American physicist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics, shared with his thesis advisor Joseph Hooton Taylor Jr., "for the discovery of a new type of pulsar, a discovery that has opened up new possibilities for the study of gravitation". He was a specialist in the pulsar studies and gravitational waves.
