Sarojini Naidu's Birth Anniversary

Sarojini Naidu was born on 13 February 1879 in Hyderabad, India. She was also known by the sobriquet The Nightingale of India. She was also one of the Framers of The Indian Constitution. Her birthday is celebrated as Women's day all over India. She died on March 2,1949.

North Korea conducts third nuclear test successfully

North Korea has conducted the third under ground  nuclear test successfully on 12 February 2013 after weeks of threats . The State-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said a “miniaturised” nuclear device had been  detonated successfully at the test site.The detonation caused a tremor with a magnitude of between 4.9 and 5.1, sending shock-waves through the Korean peninsula.






D. Vinayachandran Passed Away

D. Vinayachandran was born on 13 May 1946 and he died on 11 February 2013  was a well-known Malayalam poet in India. He is one of the proponents of modern style of prose in Malayalam poetry. He worked as a Malayalam professor in various colleges for more than thirty years.

Gireesh Puthenchery (3rd Death Anniversary)

 
Gireesh Puthenchery was a noted Malayalam lyricist and screenwriter. He won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Lyrics seven times. He born on  September 23, 1959 in Kozhikode and he died on  February 10, 2010. Beginning his career with the 1988 film Chakravaalathinappuram and Happy Husbands was his last film.

25th Amendment to the US Constitution

25th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified by Minnesota on February 10, 1967. Its purpose was to clarify presidential succession in case of death, resignation, or disability. It deals with succession to the Presidency and establishes procedures both for filling a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, as well as responding to Presidential disabilities

Mohammad Afzal Guru was hanged

 
Mohammad Afzal Guru (hanged on  9 February 2013) was found guilty of conspiration in the December 2001 attack on the parliament of India and was sentenced to death by the  Supreme court in 2002. The sentence was scheduled to be carried out on 20 October 2006, but Afzal was given a stay of execution and remained on death row. On 3 February 2013, his mercy petition was rejected by the Indian President. He was hanged at Delhi's Tihar Jail at 06:25am on February 09, 2013. He belongs to Jammu & Kashmir and he was completed his first year MBBS course  and he was preparing for IAS exam.However, he became a member of   Jammu & Kashmir liberation front  where he received terrorist training and became involved in terrorist activities

Charles Edward Kingsford Smith

Charles Edward Kingsford Smith  was born on 9 February 1897. He is often called by his nickname Smithy, was an early Australian aviator. In 1928, he earned global fame when he made the first trans-Pacific flight from the US to Australia. He died on  8 November 1935.

Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was born on 8th February 1834 in Tobolosk. He is a Russian chemist and inventor. He created the first version of the periodic table of elements, and used it to predict the properties of elements yet to be discovered. He died on February 2, 1907.

World Cancer Day 2013 - 4 February 2013


Cancer is a leading case of death worldwide and accounted for seven million deaths (around 13% of all deaths) in2008.
Cancer is the uncontrolled growth and spread of cells. It can affect almost any part of the body. The growths often invade surrounding tissue and can metastasize to distant sites. Many cancers can be prevented by avoiding exposure to common risk factors, such as tobacco smoke. In addition, a significant proportion of cancers can be cured, by surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, especially if they are detected early.

Each year on 4 February, WHO supports International Union Against Cancer to promote ways to ease the global burden of cancer
