Gujarat & Maharashtra formed

The Bombay State was a state of India, split into Gujarat & Maharashtra states on May 1, 1960.

 

 The States Reorganisation Act, 1956 defined boundaries for the states within India on the basis of languages. The Bombay State  that was formed as a consequence of this act, however, was composed of different areas where different languages were spoken, so divide the Bombay State into two states

Hitler committed suicide

 

Adolf Hitler committed suicide by gunshot on 30 April 1945 in his Fuhrebunker in Berlin. His wife Eva committed suicide with him by ingesting cyanide. Hitler was born on 20 April 1889  and he was an Austrian-born German politician and the leader of the Nazi Party. 

Justice M. Fathima Beevi

Justice M. Fathima Beevi was the first female judge to be appointed to the Supreme Court of India and the first Muslim woman to be appointed to any higher judiciary. She is the first woman judge of a Supreme Court of a nation in India and Asia. She was born on April 30, 1927.

Harold Clayton Urey

Harold Clayton Urey was born on  April 29, 1893 and he was an American physical chemist whose pioneering work on isotopes earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1934. He discovered deuterium and he played a significant role in the development of the atom bomb, but may be most prominent for his contribution to theories on the development of organic life from non-living matters.

International Dance Day

Workers' Memorial Day

Workers' Memorial Day, International Workers' Memorial Day or International Commemoration Day (ICD) for Dead and Injured or Day of Mourning   takes place annually around the world on April 28, an international day of remembrance and action for workers killed, disabled, injured or made unwell by their work.

Samuel Finley Breese Morse

 

Samuel Finley Breese Morse was born on April 27, 1791, he is an American inventor. He contributed to the invention of a single-wire telegraph system based on European telegraphs, was a co-inventor of the Morse code, and also an accomplished painter.He died on April 2, 1872.

World Intellectual Property Day

World Intellectual Property Day is observed annually on 26 April. The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to "raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life" and "to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovations to the development of societies across the globe.

A patent was granted for the thimble.

 

On April 25, 1684 a patent is granted for a thimble. A thimble is a small hard pitted cup worn for protection on the finger that pushes the needle in sewing.

World Book and Copyright Day

World Book Day or World Book and Copyright Day is a yearly event on 23 April, organized by UNESCO to promote reading, publishing and copyright. It is also known as International Day of the Book or World Book Days.  In the United Kingdom, the day is instead recognized on the first Thursday in March. World Book Day was celebrated for the first time on 23 April 1995.

Steve Fossett

James Stephen "Steve" Fossett was an American businessman, and a record-setting aviator, sailor, and adventurer. He was Born on April 22, 1944 and he was the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in a balloon and first to cross Pacific in a balloon. He died on September 3, 2007.

The first human eye transplant

On April 22, 1969, doctors at Methodist Hospital in Houston performed what was billed as the first human eye transplant on John Madden, 54, owner of a photography studio. The donor eye was taken from a man who had died of a brain tumor and the donor cornea,lens and iris were given to Madden. Although the transplant failed to restore Madden's sight--it has been reported that the donor eye was not preserved enough to keep it viable--the historic procedure was considered a medical miracle.

Earth Day is an annual day on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Earth Day is observed on April 22 each year. The April 22 date was designated as International Mother Earth Day by a consensus resolution adopted by the UN in 2009. It is celebrated in more than 192 countries every year.

Thrissur Pooram

 

Thrissur Pooram  is one of the most popular temple festivals of the South Indian state Kerala. It is held at Vadakkunnathan every year on 'Pooram'  day of the Malayalam Calender month of 'Medam'. 'Pooram' day is the day when the moon rises with the Pooram star. In 2013 its Pooram is on April 21.

India's first satellite launched

Aryabhata was India's first satellite, named after the great Indian astronomer of the same name. It was launched by the Soviet Union on 19 April 1975 from Kapustin Yar using a Cosmos-3M launch vehicle.launch vehicle. It was built by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to gain experience in building and operating a satellite in space.

World Hemophilia Day

World Hemophilia Day is an international observance  held annually on April 17 by the World Federation of Hemophilia  (WFH). It is awareness day awareness day for hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, which also serves to raise funds  and attract volunteers for the WFH. It was started in 1989; April 17 was chosen in honor of Frank Schnabel's birthday.

Wilbur Wright

Wilbur Wright, the co- inverter of airplane was born on April 16.1867and died on May30,1972.
 The Wright brothers  (Orville & Wilbur ) were two American brothers, inventors, and aviation pioneers who were credited with inventing and building the world's first successful airplane and making the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight, on December 17, 1903.

First black Mayor of Chicago

Harold Lee Washington was born on April 15, 1922, he  was an American lawyer and politician who became the first African-American Mayor of Chicago serving from 1983 until his death on November 25, 1987.

Johannes Stark - Stark effect

Johannes Stark was born on April 15, 1874, he was a German physicist, and Physics Nobel Prize laureate who was closely involved with the Deutsche Physik movement under the Nazi regime. He died on 21 June 1957. He discovered the Stark effect. It is the shifting and splitting of spectral lines of atoms and molecules due to presence of an external static electric field.

Titanic Sank

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 ( Hit an iceberg 11:40 pm (ship's time) 14 April 1912 on her maiden voyage and sank 2h 40m later) after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from from Southampton, UK to New York City ( US ).

Vishu - Equal

"Vishu" in Sanskrit means "equal". 

Vishu is a Hindu festival celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala and in the Tulunadu region(Mangalore & Udupi districts) usually in the second week of April in  the Gregorian calender .It marks the new year in accordance with Kolla varsham the Malayalam calendar. In 2013 Vishu is celebrated on April 14.

Christiaan Huygens

Christiaan Huygens was born on April 14, 1629, he was a prominent Dutch mathematician, astronomer, physicist and horologist. His work included early telescopic studies elucidating the nature of the rings of Saturn and the discovery of its moon Titan, the invention of the pendulum clock and other investigations in timekeeping, and studies of both optics  and the centrifugal force.Huygens achieved note for his argument that light consists of waves,now known as the Huygens-Fresnel principles.

Donald James Leslie

Donald James Leslie was born on April 13, 1911. He created and manufactured the Leslie speaker that refined the sound of the Hammond organ and helped popularize electronic music. He died on September 2, 2004.

First human spaceflight launched

The first human spaceflight was launched by the Soviet Union on April 12,1961 as a part of the Vostok program , with Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin aboard.

International Labour Organization established

Arnold Orville Beckman

 

Arnold Orville Beckman was born on April 10, 1900. He was an American chemist who invented a pH meter (1934) for measuring acidity and alkalinity and the quartz spectrophotometer, an instrument which pioneered automatic chemical analysis. He died on May 18, 2004.

Constitution of Pakistan created

The Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is the supreme law of the State of Pakistan. Drafted by the government of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, with an additionally assistance from the country's opposition parties, it was approved by the legislative assembly on April 10 and ratified on 14 August 1973.

Boeing 737 - First flight

The Boeing 737 made its first flight on April 9, 1967. It is a short- to medium-range twin-engine narrow-body jet airliner. Originally developed as a shorter, lower-cost twin-engine airliner derived from Boeing's707 and 727, the 737 has developed into a family of nine passenger models with a capacity of 85 to 215 passengers.

 

First female Prime Minister of Britain passed away

Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, the first woman to become British prime minister, has died at the age of 87 on April 8,2013. She was a British politician, the longest-serving (1979–1990) Prime Minister of UK of the 20th century, and the only woman ever to have held the post and she was called the "Iron Lady" for her personal and political toughness.. She was born on 13 October 1925. 

Discovery Island opened & closed

Discovery Island is an 11.5 acres island  in Bay Lake at Walt Disney World in Bay Lake, Florida .

The island opened as Treasure Island on April 8, 1974, as a place to observe wildlife, and was later renamed Discovery Island when it was recognized as a zoological park. It closed to the public on April 8, 1999, but continued to operate until July 9, 1999.
